Tips to Stay Safe While Commuting - Part 2
Apr 13th 2016
In part two of our tips for commuting by motorcycle, we’ll take a look at some of the best practices for hitting the road. Here are three more tips to keep in mind when you decide to leave your car parked at home.
Don’t Be Afraid to Accelerate
You should always be defensive on the road, taking care to make sure you stay out of blind spots, have enough room to brake without being hit from behind, and actively signalling lane changes. However, defensive driving is not the only tactic to use in order to stay safe. Sometimes, accelerating to quickly escape a blind spot or to get yourself out of harm’s way is the best course of action. While it makes sense to brake quickly in a car, in certain situations, it can actually place you in more danger as a motorcyclist.
Stick to the Speed Limit
When riding in traffic, you want to be predictable. The easiest way to stay predictable is to stick to the speed limit. Resist the urge to speed through traffic, even if you’re running late to work.
Not only are speeding motorcycles a tempting target for police, they endanger themselves and other riders on the road. Motorcycles that weave in and out of cars in an effort to go fast often surprise other drivers who cannot predict their movements. This is one of the leading causes of collisions between motorcyclists and drivers. When in doubt, just take it slowly, stick to the speed limit, and stay safe.
Keep Up on Repairs
Keep your motorcycle in tune and well maintained. When your engine is not performing at its best, it won’t receive enough power to help you get out of sticky situations. Remember, motorcycles are easily modified and customized, letting you upgrade your engine’s exhaust to a system that gives your engine more power.
