Tips to Stay Safe While Commuting - Part 1
Apr 8th 2016
More and more people are starting to take to two wheels for their daily commute, reducing the number of cars on the road, and saving their pocketbooks when it comes to the cost of gas. With the increase in daily ridership comes an increase in potential problems in traffic. Here are a few tips to help leave you car in the garage and start commuting by motorcycle.
Look Out For Yourself
On the road, you’ll be surrounded by countless drivers and other riders, each with their own concerns and habits. You’re a small vehicle on the road with many large trucks and cars, each with a potentially distracted driver behind the wheel.
The best course of action is to trust no one. Think ahead, prepare for drivers not to see you, and always be ready to brake in order to avoid a collision. While most drivers are predictable and follow the rules of the road, some simply make poor decisions. Though it would be nice if other drivers recognized all motorcyclists the same way they do other cars, it won’t always happen. Be prepared, be alert, and don’t expect other drivers to look out for your well being.
Stay Visible
Avoid riding in other people’s blind spots. When a collision happens, it’s usually because the driver didn’t notice the motorcycle by their trunk. Let’s face it— motorcycles are small vehicles and are easily hidden by the bodies of cars on the road. How do you know if you’re in a driver’s blind spot? If you can’t see the driver’s face in their rear view mirror, or if the side view mirrors are showing nothing more than the car’s paint job, the driver won’t be able to see you. Don’t simply sit in a blind spot. Ride through them and stay safe and visible.
