Tips for Riding in the Rain

Mar 15th 2016

At RC Components, we believe your bike should be a well-loved, well-used piece of equipment. Many people put their bikes in the garage in bad weather, choosing instead to take their car. Rain doesn’t have to put a damper on your ride. Here are a few tips to help you ride in the rain.

  • Wear the right gear. Look for waterproof options, but be sure they’re breathable. The last thing you want is to get hot on your ride. Rain also makes it difficult for other drivers to see you. Wearing high-visibility clothing can make all the difference in a car seeing you or colliding with you as they try to merge lanes.
  • Avoid puddles. While feeling the splash and spray may be fun, puddles often obscure what’s underneath the water. You might be heading into a deep pothole rather than a shallow puddle of water.
  • Brake slowly. Even a small amount of rain can make the road slick. Braking slowly will reduce the risk of skidding or falling. Similarly, be sure to leave plenty of space between you and the car or bike in front of you. It takes longer to brake in the rain, and braking slowly prevents collisions.
  • When in doubt, go slow. If you’re unsure about the road conditions, or feel that your bike will skid and slide too easily, reduce your speed. This will give you better control over your bike in questionable conditions.
  • Relax as you’re riding. Even if conditions are bad, staying tense will only make it more difficult to handle your bike. Take a breath, relax, and stay focused on the road. You’ll be better able to handle unexpected movements if you’re not tensed up.
