Four Winter Motorcycle Maintenance Tips
May 17th 2023
Winter can be tough on motorcycles, especially if you live in an area with harsh weather conditions. Snow, ice, and road salt can cause damage to your bike's wheels and components and decrease its overall performance. However, with proper maintenance and care, you can keep your motorcycle running smoothly throughout the winter months. Here are four winter motorcycle maintenance tips from RC Components, one of the leading custom wheel manufacturers in the industry.
Protect Your Wheels and Tires from Salt and Moisture
Road salt and moisture can corrode and damage to your motorcycle’s wheels and tires. To protect them, apply a coat of wax or a protective sealant to your wheels before the winter season starts. Additionally, check your tires for signs of wear or damage and replace them if necessary. Consider upgrading to winter tires with better traction and grip to improve your bike's handling on slippery roads.
Keep Your Battery Charged
Cold temperatures can drain your battery's charge and reduce its overall capacity. To keep your battery charged, start your motorcycle every two to three weeks and let it run for at least 10 minutes. Alternatively, use a battery tender or maintainer to keep your battery charged throughout the winter season. It's also a good idea to disconnect your battery and store it in a warm, dry place if you're not using your motorcycle for an extended period of time.
Check Your Fluids and Filters
Winter weather can cause your motorcycle's fluids to thicken and become less effective. Check your oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels regularly and top them off if necessary. Also, check your air filter and replace it if it's dirty or clogged. A clean air filter can improve your bike's performance and fuel efficiency.
Store Your Motorcycle Properly
If you're not using your motorcycle during the winter months, it's important to store it properly to prevent damage and corrosion. Clean your bike thoroughly and apply a coat of wax or protective sealant to its surfaces if you’re storing it. Store your motorcycle in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area, preferably on a stand to prevent flat spots on your tires. Additionally, consider using a motorcycle cover to protect it from dust, debris, and moisture.
