Do You Need Loud Exhaust Pipes?
Mar 4th 2016
Custom exhaust pipes allow for beautiful lines along your bike, making it eye-catching and functional. Years ago, the theory that loud exhaust pipes saves the lives of motorcyclists in traffic came to be accepted as a common truth. While we’re not denying that loud exhaust pipes do alert drivers to the presence of your bike, they’re not all they’re cracked up to be.
Position of the Pipe
Exhaust pipes direct the exhaust to the back of your bike. This means there will be a discrepancy between the amount of noise behind you and what’s projected forward during your ride. The difference in volume means that cars behind you will hear you leaving while cars in front of you still may not have an idea of how close you are.
Are They Necessary?
Loud pipes do draw attention to your bike, but they’re not strictly necessary for rider safety. The best way to ride safely is to follow the rules of the road and assume drivers aren’t paying attention or looking for your bike. We’re not saying you have to be paranoid, but don’t fall into autopilot and lose all awareness of the traffic around you. Further, the noise can really get annoying after hours on the road. Why add stress to your ride?
