3 Great Rides Around Sturgis

Jun 27th 2016

It’s summer and that means it’s time to start thinking about making your way up to Sturgis for the annual motorcycle rally. While there’s always a lot to see in Sturgis, from vendors to entertainment, don’t forget to head outside the rally and take in the scenery. Here are a few of our favorite rides around Sturgis to give you the full Black Hills experience.

Mount Rushmore

This ride is just as much about the destination as it is the scenery. From Sturgis, head south on Highway 385 for about 25 miles. You’ll pass through the scenic hill country of South Dakota, with a number of small towns along the road. This road is curvy, giving you plenty of opportunity to push your bike and your cornering skills, especially for newer riders. Turn left on US-16 and follow for another 27 miles. While not particularly challenging, this ride culminates in a visit to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Spearfish Canyon

Spearfish Canyon is a 50 mile loop passing through Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls, and the Black Hills Mining Museum. Take in the scenic views of waterfalls, streams and cliffs along the way on this slow, curvy ride. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, so be sure to pack a camera to capture those gorgeous falls.

Needles Highway

For the experienced rider, the Needles Highway loop offers a challenging terrain full of sharp turns, switchbacks and a 2000 foot elevation drop. Along the way, you’ll pass through Custer State Park where riders often see wild buffalo grazing on the plains. If you enjoy hiking, stop off at Sylvan Lake where you can adventure on foot before hitting the road back to Sturgis for the evening.

This year, take in a few rides outside of Sturgis and reconnect with nature away from the hustle and bustle of the rally. Before you head out, pick up some new custom motorcycle wheels for your ride and hit the rally in style.
