Take Your Bike into the Mountains this Fall!

Oct 31st 2016

No matter where you ride, there are challenges you’ll face on the road. While the right set of custom motorcycle wheels will help you look great as you cruise down the highway, they won’t do much in the way of keeping you upright when riding on winding mountain roads. Since this autumn has been particularly mild across much of the country, taking to the mountains is the perfect way to enjoy the cooler weather before the snow sets in. However, there are a few tips you’ll want to consider before you head out on the road.

Keep to The Middle of the Lane

When you’re riding at higher elevations, the wind can be unpredictable and surprise wind gusts can grab your wheels and make your bike swerve. Your best line of defense in areas with high cross winds or gusts is to ride in the middle of the lane. This will give you wiggle room if your bike does get caught in a gust. You’ll be able to maneuver your bike in either direction without heading into oncoming traffic or crashing into the side of the mountain.

Changing Temperatures

Be prepared for a change in temperatures along your ride. Lower elevations are often warmer than the summit and while it may be a pleasant 75 degrees as you start your ride, you may find that freezing temps await you at the top. Pack warmer layers for the ride so you can enjoy the scenery comfortably.

Don’t Rush Into Curves

The sharp turns on mountain roads, especially as you near the top of the mountain, can be dangerous for everyone, but when oncoming traffic is involved, you’ll definitely need to be cautious along the journey. When you’re approaching a blind curve, where the rest of the road is hidden from view, you’ll want to stay away from the center line. Keep to the outside of your lane just in case an oncoming car has crossed the yellow line on a sharp turn. This will keep you safe and help you avoid potential head on collisions.

Prepare for Weather

Even if it seems clear when you leave home, conditions on the mountain can be completely different when you’re at high elevations. Clouds that appear as little more than white wisps in the morning can turn into a raging blizzard by mid-afternoon. Consult the weather forecast before you head out. The last thing you want to do is get caught in a freak snowstorm that leaves a slick layer of ice on the road just as you’re ready to head down the mountain.

Check Your Mirrors

When cruising on a mountain, you’ll be subjected to inexperienced drivers who are not comfortable driving on curves, and others who take them far too quickly. Check your mirrors frequently and pull off if a faster driver tailgates you. Courtesy and safety are key to a fun mountain cruise.
